Puzzle #23

The Monkey and the Coconut

Ten people landed on a desert island. They found there lots of coconuts and a small monkey. During their first day they got several coconuts and put them all into a community pile. After they’d finished their work they decided to go to sleep and divide the coconuts into ten equal piles the next morning.

That night one castaway woke up hungry and decided to take his share. After dividing up the coconuts in 10 piles, he found out that there should be one more coconut, so that everybody got the same amount. Then he noticed the monkey holding one coconut in her hands. So he tried to take the coconut back so that there was the same amount of coconuts for everybody. However when he tried to do it, the monkey hit him on his head and killed him.

Later another castaway woke up hungry and decided to take his share. He was surprised to find the first castaway dead, which meant that the total amount would be divided by 9 and that made him happy. After dividing them up into 9 piles, there appeared to be shortage of coconuts. He needed 1 more, to divide them equally. After that the second castaway saw the monkey with the necessary coconut and tried to take it back. The cruel creature hit him and the castaway died. Then the story repeated itself, until the 10th castaway got the entire pile of coconuts.

What is the smallest possible amount of coconuts in the pile? Don’t take into account the one, that monkey had.
